Can you tell me your net worth?
This is not an actual request… its the start of a more important conversation.
If I asked you to tell me, off the top of your head, your current “total net wealth” how accurate would you be? If you couldn’t tell me, how long would it take you to work it out?
It’s the one thing that I find differentiates people who are on track and getting ahead financially, and those who aren’t…
If you can get within 1-2% of the actual figure, then there’s a good chance that you are either on track to becoming independently wealthy or, are already there. If you’re off the mark, then chances are you have a bit of work to do.
What gets measured gets managed, and that is generally correct, particularly when it comes to accumulating wealth. It’s the one metric that I find most commonly understood by people on track to becoming financially free.
Why is this, relatively simple question, so difficult for people to get right? Well, it generally comes down to two things.
The first is about taking an interest.
The truth is, if you can answer the question, there’s a good chance that you’re already paying close attention to what is going on.
The second is about being informed and discipline.
And as we’ve seen in many cases, often, the most significant financial problems are incurred by those who aren’t paying attention. They tend to push their luck with their spending or have trouble just saying no to a sudden craving.
I know this seems trite, but it really is that simple. Sometimes, getting a handle on your finances can be as straightforward as just nailing one or two things, and that can open doors to what seems far more complicated, but in reality, really is quite simple.
In what I do, I work with a wide variety of people all looking for answers to various financial questions. A lot of people think that financial advice is just for wealthy people. But the truth is, a lot of the people I work with have differing reasons for engaging my firm. Some have high aspirations, while others want help fast-tracking a goal, and some just want the whole thing sorted by someone they trust.
Whoever it is, and whatever their motivation, they’re willing to take action to make it happen. In my experience, the sooner you take action, the easier it is to create the desired result.
In summary, there are many ways of addressing your financial affairs, but sometimes it’s just about knowing where to start. For me, knowing how to answer the question “What’s your total net wealth” is one area of focus that can begin to open doors to a world of understanding, control and financial success.
